A new tourism route was tested in Grodno during an international cycling race, BelTA learned from Oleg Andreichik, Head of the Sport and Tourism Office of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee. The cycling route Path of Health in the urban forest Pyshki has been arranged as part of the international technical aid project on environmentally friendly transport that unites neighbors. The cycling route is the first stage of the project to create a network of bicycle tracks in Grodno and the suburbs. The cycling route represents 5.15km of bicycle tracks with hard surface and partial lighting. The existing path of health has been reconstructed. The length of the existing bicycle track and the pedestrian walkway has been nearly doubled. The main part of the project’s funding was earmarked for accomplishing the goal. Representatives of the Lithuanian side (Druskininkai) and the Belarusian side (Grodno) were invited to participate in the first cycling race along the new bicycle track. Anyone can now use the convenient bicycle track. Apart from creating the paved bicycle track the Belarusian part of the project envisages sketching out and creating two non-paved bicycle tracks. One will be 42km long and the other one will be 51km. The first one will begin at Festivalnaya Street to go along the urban forest Pyshki. It will reach the village of Gozha, turn to the Neman River’s bank, stretch all the way to Privalki at the Lithuanian border. The second non-paved bicycle track will begin near the old bridge on the Neman River to end at banks of the Lithuanian village of Svendubre in the border zone. In the future both bicycle tracks may become transboundary by connecting the two countries. The project for environmentally friendly traffic that unites neighbors is implemented as part of the program for transboundary cooperation between Lithuania, Latvia, and Belarus in 2007-2013. The partners of the program include the Grodno City Executive Committee, the Grodno oblast office of the public association Republican Tourism and Sport Union, the administration of the city of Druskininkai. The budget of the project for the Belarusian side is €598,500.
